I haven’t run for three days… it feels like a very long time. A combination of the super-high pollen count and a virus has laid me low and I’ve even taken a day off work to try and rest.

I’m not good at resting. My life is a whirlwind of kids, family, work and running and there is rarely time to sit still. And if I do, I’m convinced I won’t get up again.

I’ve done reasonably well today… answered one work call, dealt with only ten work emails, done a bit of washing, been to the pharmacist and the GP, did the washing up, emptied the dishwasher, stripped the bed and took the eldest to school (and I’ll pick her up too). And I have a school meeting tonight that I have to attend. So, all in all a pretty restful day.

However, apart from all the walking (I’ve felt too dizzy to drive) I’ve not ran and I cancelled my PT. Obviously this means I will have lost all my fitness and will be starting back on a couch to 5k when I feel up to it. I mean three days – that will have undone all my hard work so far this year, right?

I’m thinking not. Sometimes it pays just to rest and listen to your body. I have a race at the weekend that I’ve been looking forward to since I booked it in January and I would rather be in with a chance of taking part in that than pushing through a couple of training session and having to drop out. I don’t like not running, I’m not fun to be around when I’m not running, but this time I’m taking it easy and focusing on the bigger picture.
